G7IDJ - Station Info

My name is Michael. I got licensed in August 1990 after having studied towards my RAE at Mexborough DARS. I do attend the club from time to time as work permits.
I work as a manager/lecturer for a college in a department specialising in training for networking technologies. Still my passion is RF engineering and to this effect I do work voluntarily for Radio Eden Ltd. building small broadcast transmitters and commissioning them in third world countries.  My home QTH is Paderborn in West Germany but I have been in exile here in the middle of England since 1989.
I have been active on and off for the last 15+ years but I have never lost interest and count myself as a member of the Amateur Radio community. You will find from myself regular comments and entries to the discussion threads on www.eham.net. I do support the RSGB by being a member. Being a committed Christian I have joined WACRAL  (World Association of Christian Radio Amateurs and Listeners) www.wacral.org many years ago.

My main interests in Amateur Radio are to explore various modes of operation. Recently my interest for data modes got revived. I have discovered the joys of PSK31 and Internet Gateway linking. I also enjoy mobile or portable operation. There is nothing like a good day out in the open with your equipment and set up a station for a couple of hours in the afternoon.

The QTH - The Region

The QTH is Wombwell which is part of the Dearne Valley an old mining community in the heart of South Yorkshire. Take some time and look at my QSL card. The pictures on the card portray the region around the turn of the 19th century. The history of coal production found a conclusion in the mid 80ies where the government of the day was determined to destroy the industry without putting something else in it's place. from the mid 80ies to the mid 90ies the towns of the Dearne Valley were marked by one of the worst depressions in the country with unemployment rates soaring at 20%, widespread poverty and reliance on state subsidies. Fortunately this has gradually changed over the last 10 years and some form of normality has returned to the area.

Wombwell is situated 5 miles South of Barnsley, 10 miles North of Sheffield, 50 miles East of Manchester and about 30 miles South of Leeds.

Here is a view from above. The QTH is about 70m above sea-level note the red dot for the QTH.
The Locator is IO93hm

Find below a map of the QTH within the context of the region - take note of the round circle in the middle of the map.
